I did not agree with the wild-card results (Jasmine Murray? Megan Joy? Really?), but I have to admit that the promise of surprises to come did shake things up for an episode or two. And while I really wanted Alexis Grace to get a second chance, the judges' decision to snatch Matt Giraud from the jaws of Elimination Night defeat meant the piano man got to stick around long enough to slay the disco dragon with his funky-chic take on “Stayin' Alive.”

The verdict: The judges' wild-card and save picks weren't nifty, but the ideas are keepers.
