Ann Powers' LA Times Review. It had a theme - their hand gestures, WTF?

The two performers whose hands mostly stay busy at the piano still managed to work in some pointing, including at each other. Matt Giraud and Scott McIntyre have very different strengths, but were paired for a rendition of Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It” that was the night’s silliest moment. Individualy, each did better. Giraud was relaxed and masterful covering the soulful standards “Hard to Handle” and “Georgia.” MacIntyre stressed vocal sweetness with singer-songwriterly choices, and created his own semaphore: a slowly raised open hand that followed his vocal ascents.

The whole review

I'm not loving these reviews. I wanted superlatives!

This was a very strange review. Talking about everyone's hand gestures??

I'll take "relaxed and masterful".

I'm going to have to go back and read these again to pick out the good parts. I was crushed to see any criticism of Matt after his great set last night, but they all did have pretty good things to say.

I guess we should remember - Jim Cantiello's videos and articles are always big on snark. I guess he has to find a way to be funny (matt has more runs than montezuma's revenge....grrrrr), so anything he says should be taken in that context.

I just never have agreed with Ann Powers. She lives on some other planet. I stopped reading her column last year. Not at all surprised that she has a different spin on it. I think she is the first reviewer who didn't like Tell Me About It. How is it silly?

That Cantiello sound like"I´m so intelligent and sarcastic"-jerk, JT comparisons are avoidable and that Ann woman had a strange approach to the show, she was concentrating on body language - how original is that... Rolling Eyes

I think these reviews must be taken with a grain of salt. I'm sure the American Idols concert isn't the biggest thrill of any of those columnists' lives to begin with, so they are skeptical going in. Considering that, I think the reviews were pretty good. Of course the most praise will be reserved for the top ranking Idols, but I think that Matt was fairly well represented, if not quite a bit underestimated, in those reviews.

What I'm more concerned about and ecstatic over are the fan comments. Any snarky, cynical or snobby critic can throw out backhanded compliments and digs about the Idols, but all that doesn't seem to effect public opinion. Peoples' visceral reactions to Matt last night were overwhelmingly positive. THEY are the ones who will buy the tickets and CDs and downloads. And they'll do it because they genuinely enjoy Matt's music, not because some jaded writer told them to. Besides, if the public actually listened to the critics, then Idol would have been off the air years ago!

I'm at work and can't see all the video links, so apologies if this has been posted on this very page -

Here's Jim C's interview with the idols. Very short, but Matt and Adam are the only 2 solo songs they feature - short but sweet.

Oh Thanks so much!

He really looks the hottest ever in this outfit and no fedoras is definitely better.
Gasp, he is soo yummy here.

Anyways, sigh. I am still keeping my promise to remain positive that someday before September someone will give Matt a chance. I mean, no ONE absolutely NO ONE wants to nurture and promote his talent??? I can't believe that.

There must be someone out there within the rec executives, ther just has to! I don't want to feel worried about his future again. confused

I'm with you, Jenna. The only way I see Matt being similar to JT is in the versitility department, but even then, Matt trumps him! JT is versitile in the respect that he's collaborated with myriad other artists, but he's not particularly adept at capturing an array of genres, merely singing hooks and choruses in some variety of pop singles. To my knowledge, JT doesn't even play instruments, and his "songwriting" skills are probably relegated to rhyming words and filling in spaces with runs.

Maybe people see the curly hair and think of JT? Who knows, but I will say that if Matt was in JT's place in any of his videos, it would be a million times hotter. Matt all breathy and sweaty, pressed up against Ciara singing "Love Sex Magic"? Yeah, THAT would be some titillation right there. JT makes sexy too corny for me. Bad shivers.

All of these JT comparrions are beginning to give me a headache. I agree with ovenmitt, that a lot of it may be coming merely from the fact that they both have similar styles, and curly hair (even their voices, to me, aren't similar). But as far as their Music, they could not be more different in my eyes. JT is very much pretty boy, commercial pop (and annoying in my opinion) which works for him but doesn't allow him a lot of room for variety and expirementation-All of his songs do follow the same pattern with different lyrics and beats.

Matt has a bit more edge (Soul/Rock) and I guess "grown man Swagger". I don't get the Poppy cute boy vibe from him, but a more sophisticated groove and genuine respect for his music, and a need to make it good, and lasting (not just the "now music" that is good for the summer, but loses it's popularity after a while because it was never really anything special to begin with).

I am not trying to bash JT, because I can respect the fact that he knows his market and works with it, however I would be more inclined to believe in Kris Allen and JT being compared than to Matt.

THIS is the review I've been waiting for!

Quote :
THE BIGGEST SURPRISES

Matt Giraud burst on stage a whirling bundle of blues, dancing and singing "Too Hard To Handle," the Otis Redding song (and later the Black Crowes) with a confidence and swagger that left you asking yourself, "Where did THAT come from?"

Where the piano-playing singer on the show seemed almost shy and reserved at times, here he displayed a confidence to go with his piano playing and singing (especially on his final song, "You Found Me," a Fray cover, that seemed like it would certainly play in a nightclub with a band, Giraud's hoped-for dream).

mattyfan:

After following Idols for some time, I've come to accept success is relative. If Matt gets to make his kind of music, get on the road to perform and build a loyal fanbase, I'll consider him very successful! He has modest dreams, so I don't think he'll be disappointed. It'd be great if he gets signed, of course. That'd be a huge vote of confidence for him from the industry. But it's really not the only path to success for Matt, so I'm just trying not to dwell on it too much. Rather, always celebrate the little good things. =)

Ovenmitt:

What I'm more concerned about and ecstatic over are the fan comments. Any snarky, cynical or snobby critic can throw out backhanded compliments and digs about the Idols, but all that doesn't seem to effect public opinion. Peoples' visceral reactions to Matt last night were overwhelmingly positive. THEY are the ones who will buy the tickets and CDs and downloads. And they'll do it because they genuinely enjoy Matt's music, not because some jaded writer told them to. Besides, if the public actually listened to the critics, then Idol would have been off the air years ago!

Ok..I've captured these 2 comments from ovenmitt and mattyfan because I think they are GREAT and sums it up FANTASTICALLY and its very important for ALL of us to keep in mind that Matt is LOVING what he is doing and yes I'm sure he wants to be very successful in his music career but you don't have to be the next "JT" or "Brittney Spears", "Miley Cyrus", or "Michael Jackson", etc. etc. to be successful in the music world..these people have been very commercialized and promoted, promoted, promoted! Matt has "TRUE" and "RAW" talent and he WILL get noticed and recognized for this and I think he will have a very successful future career in the music industry. I HATE that damn critics and such want to compare him to Justin Timberlake just because he somewhat resembles him..(I personally think matt is much HOTTER then JT..seriously!) and although JT is talented in his "popish" sort of way I bet if you put those two up against each other in a sing off Matt would BURY him..and I'm not just saying this because i'm bias towards Matt...Matt's range of singing and "depth" is uncomparable to JT...JT is all about the "show" and the dance..blah, blah, blah...Justin Timberlake could NOT and I repeat could NOT sing Georgia like Matt can!! Period!

So with all that being said..I have no worries about Matt and I just think some people on here need to REALLY stop worrying and fretting so much about his "record deal"..Matt will make a record ..who with? I don't know but who really cares!! Matt's music is very relevent and PEOPLE ARE LOVING HIM and that is all that matters... AND it is no way going to NOT help him to be hanging out with celebrities that can spread the word about him and Samantha Ronson IS in the music industry and I'm sure she knows some "important" people..OUR BOY IS GONNA BE FINE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the thing that I'm puzzled the most about from last night is Matt's twitter... hmm??..he said it was AMAZING, (well acourse) said "interesting"..but the thing that kinda got me was the word "typical" ...I'm wondering if he meant typical in the sense that Adam, Allison, Danny got alot of attention as usual...I'm sure this aspect of the tour is probably wearing on him a little because he has to be continually overshadowed by them moreless and I just CANNOT WAIT until he can get out on his OWN and do his OWN thing!!! I love you Matty Giraud!!! And I'm soooo Proud of you and your performance last night! I love you Very Happy

Ann Powers' LA Times Review. It had a theme - their hand gestures, WTF?

Quote:

Oh I did want to say one thing about this stupid a** critic's review... This just goes to show you that you should NEVER go by what stupid critic's say!! geeshhhh..You go to a KILLER concert like this and all this woman can talk about are their DAMN HAND GESTURES???? Com'on now..how stupid is this for real??? And to say the "Tell her About it" was Silly??? WTF?? I personally never really listen to critic's...how many of you ever read what critic's say about a certain movie and how awful it might be but then you go see the movie or watch it on DVD later and are like WHAT was that person thinking or talking about?? I LOVE this movie..you have to remember ...what a critic said is just "THEIR" opinion on something! pirat

From MJ's...

Quote :
So I was at Staple’s Center last night. I thought that Lil, Matt, Allison, Adam and Kris were great.

Quote :
Here’s an objective review from a non-AI fan. My husband watches AI but he’s not into any one of them. He was happy to see that all of them improved except for Danny. Danny needs to project more personality on stage. Suprisingly though Danny got more cheers than Kris. He commended Anoop for beginning to have some attitude. He also enjoyed Matt’s set.

It's interesting that you'd mention those four people, Lisa. What do they all have in common, besides the obvious superstardom thing? They are all "cultivated" musicians. Now, I definitely put MJ in a higher caliber than the other three, but all four have basically been bred for stardom. When you take dancing, acting, singing lessons your whole life, and especially when you have siblings or parents in the spotlight, you're gonna have an edge. But there's always an aura of artificaility with those kinds of performers. Their every move seems so rehearsed, their emotions so feigned, and that's a huge thing for me. If I don't feel that emotional conncection with an artist, no amount of spectacle or special lighting or catchy hooks are gonna persuade me they are legit. Different strokes, I suppose.

Matt has an inherent talent for music, and the drive and passion to go along with it. He sells the music by being authentic, connecting his emotions to the music, no frills necessary. It's all real with Matt, and while that may not reel in the most unit sales or spark billion dollar international tours, it's surely gonna attract fans who just want a good old-fashioned musician to transport them with nothing more than their voice and a piano.

The stage presence and "it" that the top 4 have is so far and above the other 6, except maybe Matt.
