When Utah's Justin Williams made it to Hollywood on last season's "American Idol," he had a powerful voice, but was a bit tentative and not really particularly dialed in to contemporary pop music. But when Williams flashed his magazine cover-worthy grin on Tuesday night's season nine premiere, it was clear that he's been working on his look and sound.

"I remember him as more of a beautiful, classical, Josh Groban kind of singer," said Matt Giraud, season eight's fifth-place finisher, who was in the Hollywood Week "White Chocolate" quartet with Williams and eventual winner Kris Allen last year. "He tried to sing pop and dance around with us, but he had that classical voice, which was amazing, but we had a hard time teaching him hip pop songs and dancing around."
Though the judges didn't on Tuesday night mention that Williams had been on the show last year, viewers got to spend a few minutes going over the inspirational story of the 27-year-old singer's battle with cancer at age 20. Now cancer-free, Williams won over the judges with his version of "Feeling Good" and scored yet another ticket to the next round.

Giraud didn't catch Tuesday night's show, but he said he's been watching YouTube clips of Williams singing with his band and noticed a big improvement. "He's getting comfortable in his own skin," said Giraud. "He was super excited to make it to Hollywood, but he didn't have much confidence in himself then. He didn't think he would make it through and was super surprised when he did."
Given his experience in Hollywood last year, Giraud predicted that Williams would come back with much more confidence. "He's a great-looking guy, so that helps," Giraud said. "And if you already made it to Hollywood, you know you're good and the producers know you're good."
As for whether Williams has a chance to make it all the way, Giraud said he had no idea. "I don't even know how to pick that," he said. "I didn't know what I was going to do or how far I was going to make it, and you never know who the producers will push and who America will love. But I definitely think this year will be better for him."

Good article! That's what I thought of Justin, too. He's come well prepared this time and may go far in the competition.

Nice to hear something from Matt. Something to tide us over till the big concert day! =)
