It seems, however, that fifth-place finisher Matt Giraud failed to get the memo about his role in the show, as he performed his three-song set with all the energy and charisma of a headliner. Sure, Matt scored immediate dividends by kicking off his set with Otis Redding’s impeccable “Hard to Handle” — a barn burner of a jam he never got to cover on the Idol stage — but he did it with such swamp-funky commitment that even before he set the piano on fire two-thirds of the way into the number, he’d managed to shed any hint of the Justin Timberlake Wannabe Syndrome that plagued his Idol run. Matt stayed at the keyboard for an excellent “Georgia on My Mind” — adding his signature hat as a nod to his hardcore fans — and then closed things with The Fray’s “You Found Me.” This final performance found Matt less reliant on the runaway vibrato that marked his season 8 rendition of the song, and instead showcased an appealing rougher edge to his vocal that, while it could be attributed to a grueling couple months on the road, ought to be something he strives to maintain going forward.
I am so happy, happy, happy today. I have been waiting for Slezak's review (sometimes nervously) since the tour started. It exceeded my hopes!! Slezak is so my new idol. I hope he forgets that I despised him during the season. Now all is love!!!

I waited that too. The headline already is awesome and the review wo-hoo! So Sarcastic- Slezak has after all sense in him to give credit were it belongs. They just have to dare to feel the music without inhibition. Shall all the cynics go to a Matt concert! That is what we need in todays world.

Saw the Sunday night show at the Prudential Center in Newark. Agree with most of the previous commentsa: an excellent show. Adam was amazing - like he was from another world. Loved the Bowie medley. Read the positive reviews of Matt's performance in this thread and was looking forward to him. He was terrific - great stage presence and just appeared to be having a blast.

OMG!! I'm so glad that Slezak's review was sooo good! because I know Matt would definitely care about his review!! woot! woot!!
At first when I started to read it I thought it was going to be bad when he said the part about Matt not "getting the memo" ..i was like WHAT?? but then I understood when I read the whole review! I'm soo happy!!

I've really been looking forward to hear what Slezak had to say. I would say that Matt has completely won him over! First, it was his personality and now it is his amazing musical prowess. Considering what Michael's take on Matt was for most of the Idol season - I think its an example of how amazing Matt is. He has completely won-over some of the more cynical and negative people . Can't wait to see more converts. Love him.

Yes! I am so happy! I was so looking forward to SLezak's review and he did not disappoint. I am so excited that Matt impressed him so much. I really love the fact he included Matt in the title of his review 'American Idols Live' tour review: Kradison rules, but Matt Giraud impresses, too! and He also said Matt should have been headlining the tour instead of Danny.
If Matt couldn't win at least he should have finished third or second IMO. Oh well. It's all water under the bridge now. I hope Matt reads his review. Has anyone twittered Matt this review? He will love it!
Now.. All that is left is for Matt to get signed! It just has to happen guys sooner or later. I really hope that record executives who were present at the concert last night were as impressed with Matt as Slezak was... I just have this feeling that another major label outside SONY/BMG should be interested by now. Let's keep praying for Matt you guys! It will happen! I hope so with all my heart.

Scott MacIntyre performed a roaring duet of Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It” with Matt Giraud, whose lovely, facile voice, especially during his solo rendition of “Georgia on My Mind,” was far more impressive live than on TV. (With crowd bias heavily in favor of Mr. Lambert, the bold individualist who wore a “Matt Giraud Is Bangin’ ” T-shirt deserves special commendation.)

WOOOHOOO! That glowing review from Slezak made me so happy! Matt said he could win him over if he had a piano in front of him. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
And the NY Times reviewer really liked Matt, too. It makes me think that some record producers who might have been in the audience were very impressed with him as well!
About that t-shirt spotted in the audience : "Matt Giraud Is Bangin'"-- wouldn't we like to know WHOM MATT IS BANGING? LOL [Sorry, I don't know what came over me!]

I don't know about you all, but reading the comments under Slezak's column has put a HUGE smile on my face. There are so many people who are giving props to Matt and saying that he needs a recording contract and that he really impressed/surprised them, etc. I'm so happy right now!

I know.. IluvMatt.
I am so thrilled. You know, each time the reviews keep getting better and better. And Slezak's is important and read by so many people. I just loved what he had to say and I love that he included Matt in the headline along Kradison. I just can't see Matt ending this tour and NOT getting a record deal.
He's done so much. Die hard Fans and new fans all want to see him get signed next. Even new converts, are already willing to buy his records and go to his solo concerts.
Really.. It's time. I don't know what is holding these producers but I hope is getting closer. I guess we still have to wait until the 19th.
I bet Matt received some calls today. He just has to have some offers already. I can't believe for one second NO ONE is interested. He seemed so happy on his twitter today but you have to remember his girlfriend is in NYC with him. Good for Matty G! Hope she makes him very happy. He deserves it after all the hard work.

Everything about your post is perfection. I told myself that I needed to return to my "real life" and stop obsessing over Matt, but that lasted for less than a day! I'm so weak! I also found out that his concert in Grand Rapids is on the sixth and I don't have school on the fourth or the seventh (a four day weekend for this teacher)! So, guess who is contemplating driving 9 1/2 hours to see Matt?! I think being there, at that environment, at that particular point in time for Matt will be so special for him..and for me.
Between Slezak's review and all of these great comments Matt has been receiving (from critics and "lukewarm" fans towards him), I can't help but think that great things are right around the corner. His personal life seems to be going along swimmingly as well. I just hope that things work out for him and that he's happy. That is what is most important. I have to believe that Matt is turning so many heads and that it'll be impossible for the "big wigs" to ignore his appeal.
Record labels should be FIGHTING over him right now. Mayby they ARE and we just don't know it yet.
Ugh. I'm going to bed. My brain hurts.

Bring over some of the comments from Slezak review...
allie Mon 08/10/09 2:47 PM Agreed about Matty G! Where was THAT kid during the show? He was confident! He was commanding the stage! He knew what to do with his voice! He was having so much fun! I was pleasantly surprised. He needs to be signed ASAP.
I Luv Matt But… Tue 08/11/09 1:36 AM He was featured more than some of the others and was an early favorite – until he did that God Awful Coldplay cover. I tried too hard to give the judges what they wanted when he wasn’t completely sure of his own identity. Now he’s matured and has found his musical identity. It’s beautiful to watch happen, actually.
JaySeaAre Mon 08/10/09 11:36 PM I think Matt’s confidence was building throughout the season, and now he is at performance level.
Mallory Mon 08/10/09 2:54 PM I was in GA, and it was super awesome to hear Matt sing “Georgia on my Mind”! Thanks for giving him the props he deserves!!
spinoc Mon 08/10/09 3:05 PM I wasn’t a Matt fan during the season but he is very dynamic on stage and I appreciate him more now.
lisak Mon 08/10/09 3:19 PMGreat review, Michael .. I agree that Matt was the one I was most surprised by on the tour – MUCH better than on the show.
DB Mon 08/10/09 3:26 PM Newark-2: Matt rocked the house with “Hard to Handle”.
Lauren Mon 08/10/09 3:28 PM Michael Slezak, are you in my head? This was exactly my assessment of the Idols when I saw them in Georgia. I expected Kradison to be great, but Matt was a fantastic surprise. I would go see him live on his own.
anonymous Mon 08/10/09 3:29 PM No one can touch Matt’s falsettos and riffs
Andrew Mon 08/10/09 3:39 PM After seeing the show a few weeks ago I agree that Matt Giraud was one of the best performers. He really had so much stage presence and sang so well. i hope he gets a record contract soon.
Janette Mon 08/10/09 4:25 PM But I hope that Matt is able to come up with a contract as I really think he has alot to give. I enjoy his singing much more than Kris.
Mon 08/10/09 4:25 PMI went to the DC show and liked it so much I went back for more to Baltimore. Kris and Matt really surprised me, I have to admit I wasn’t really expecting Kris to rock out, very cool. Matt needs a contract PRONTO I would actually pay to see him
April Mon 08/10/09 4:45 PMSlezak you always hit the nail right on the head with your reviews. Awesome! My favorites from the Atlantic City concert were Allison, Matt, Adam, and Kris.
Aiden Mon 08/10/09 4:52 PM And Matt Giraud was surprisingly amazing
Ruth Mon 08/10/09 5:26 PM Matt Giraud gave a great performance and, strangely, even more than Adam (and I HATE to admit this), he really seemed to ENJOY himself! I attended the concert with a friend who is a Danny fan, which is hard when you’re an Adam fan! Danny really needed to be in the first half, Matt in the final 4.
Maddy Mon 08/10/09 5:39 PM the one person who suprised me was matt! he is fantastic at piano!
kitten Mon 08/10/09 5:42 PM by the way, Matt really kills it on the tour. I am not surprise. i saw the talent during hollywood week. he is turning to be a great pianist and a singer and really wish him all the best in his career. i will be cheering him on. luvvvv his bubble tweets .. -
Joni Mon 08/10/09 6:13 PM Kris and Adam… as well as Anoop and Matt… my favorites. They all rocked my socks off!
Vicki Mon 08/10/09 6:35 PM Matt is a rising star
WhishesForFishes Mon 08/10/09 6:57 PM I was a huge fan of Matt on the show (I’m pretty sure I single-handedly keep him out of the bottom 3 during Disco week), and am such a fan. After seeing him in concert, too, I WOULD BUY A MATT GIRAUD CD IN A SECOND, AND LOVE IT. Sincerely, that kid is probably the most musically gifted person to have ever been on this show, and I cant wait for him to be found out.
Anne Tue 08/11/09 1:10 AM I’m with you. Next to Adam who can’t be ignored, my family saw Matt as a gifted musician but was under rated because the judges over rated Danny who has a big voice and designated him to be the contender to Adam. Danny didn’t get criticize by the judges until that Scream On opened their eyes. Lil was also overrated first few weeks. Matt’s confidence was hurt after missing the Top 12 when he was a front runner from Hollywood week and included as a Wild Card. His disaster was singing that Cold Play. But Matt is way ahead of Kris in talent and as a musician. I’m very happy he is getting what’s due him though a bit late. If Adam is not in AI8, Matt’s star would shine or in another season.
Evie Mon 08/10/09 7:05 PMReally enjoyable and fair review. I was at Prudential both nights and I have to agree with your assessment of Kradison and Matt. I was blown away by Matt
Kat Mon 08/10/09 7:12 PM I saw the show in Ft. Lauderdale, and I also found that they all sounded better live vs. on the show. In particular, I was impressed by Matt and Scott, and I loved, loved Allison, Adam and Kris! Looking forward to their albums.
MK Mon 08/10/09 8:05 PMI agree with you on the most part, although I saw the tour in a different city than NYC. However, did you not notice Kris’ guitar playing when he made the transition from piano to guitar on Bright Lights? Listen again, Michael. He’s awesome. I also thought Matt was second best on the show.
gemma Mon 08/10/09 10:43 PM Kris, Adam, Allison and Matt are the standouts to me. I saw the show in L.A. and loved them all. Matt has been the biggest surprise. He was very inconsistent on the show and seemed to lack confidence at times. But he’s got great stage presence and his vocals are strong, as he’s cut back on the unnecessary riffing. He needs a record deal of his own.
claire Mon 08/10/09 11:46 PM And then the show had to re-start with MATT! MATT IS AMAZING live! I hope to God he does a solo show in NYC soon. Don’t care if it’s all covers. I’d pay to hear that voice and those fingers tinkling the ivories!
Pabby60 Tue 08/11/09 12:04 AM These kids are all talented but, overall, MATT is far and away the best. Matt is seriously talented, and I would love to see him in a solo show. Great vocals, great musician, great dancer, great personality . . . and he gives it his all each and every time!
Out of 5 pages there were about 2 bad reviews and 2 lukewarm revies the rest were all positive!

I saw Matt last nite. First of all, he was the one Idol I got to meet at the barricades preshow as he was the only one to come out (although I heard Danny, Scott, and Mike came out later preshow. So I gotta give him props for that alone. His set was energetic especially Hard to Handle and I liked the Fray song. He also came out after the show and even though it was crazy there, took the time to sign autographs and say hello to fans.
Matt is so sweet. I love that he is winning over so many people!

That is awesome! I think the last one says it all in a nutshell!
OUR MATTY (well.. he is- and now we are sharing him with the world ) is going places ladies! There is NO WAY these kind of reviews and comments are going to be ignored!! I am SO EXCITED for him, and us of course!
