I love the part about not falling into "Idol" mediocrity & plans to make GOOD music.

The boy's gonna be a success. It is so clear. Gonna surprise a lot of people. I can't wait for it!

I liked this article a lot. I enjoyed the part crys7 quoted, and I too have high hopes that he is going to be very successful. I don't know how big a star he'll be, but I'm convinced he will make a lot of money and write and perform music for the rest of his life.

For my own selfish reasons, I also liked the following quote, which coupled with Matt's bubbletweet last week, at least seems like we will have studio music in our hands in the next month or so.

"...and he'll soon release his first solo single, "4 a.m." !!!

It is a pretty big deal to be singing the anthem at the Tigers opening. The game is sold out. Too bad he won't get to sing anything else, but it is apparently giving him some great exposure.

Love it! We just have to be patient. Our Matt's a "perfectionist" and it's the key to his life-long successful career in music.

I hope "4am" will have his awesome piano-playing. I think it will! He's mentioned somewhere his music/EP will have some Jamie Cullum influence. Perfect!!!

Also, I'm glad to hear that he's been toiling away. I had been getting a little concerned because I hadn't heard much from him lately (Cakesters notwithstanding!), but I love that he was adamant about putting out quality music. Thank the Lord for that. I will be able to blast my Giraud CD with pride: no lame music from our guy!

I wonder what focus group he is talking about? I don't remember that?

I have to admit I was pretty shocked that he chose 4Am as the single. I don't know I like the song but it is not one of my favorites. Plus I remember quite a few bad remarks at MJ's and they usually loved all the new songs. I was hoping for Brand New Day or even Baby Girl. LOL but I guess he didn't ask me!

I think the article was just using "focus group" in a general sense, showing that the online community was his focus group b/c that's where he can get immediate feedback on his new material.

4am initially wasn't one of my favorites, but I'm now LOVING the new studio version. Sounds really good.

I actually liked "4am" when I saw the youtube soundcheck video with the band. It sounded great, groovy and so much fun. I love that Matt gets to show off his piano skills and vocals equally well. I love it, love it! I've just seen Jamie Cullum in concert and all the more I got excited with this type of music from Matt for his first single. I,of course, am more of a pop-rock music fan in general (rather than pop-jazz) so I'm looking forward to that repertoire from Matt -- based on interviews, that seems to be what Matt wants his music to be eventually and he's just easing pop-jazzy fans to it. I think it'll be a good start.

I have a feeling Matt's trying to get labels' attention to his recorded songs at the moment. I wish someone would bite already. Where is the support from Kara??? Uuugggh. ..she's such a flake!

I also did not love 4am as much as some of the others -- it is about 6th on my list after BND, IMYT, IISH, BIABH,ARY -- but then that is because I love all of them! But the studio version, or what we have heard of it, sounds really amazing.


On MJs, there were two criticisms of 4am. The first was that some people thought it was boring, but that has surely been fixed with the studio production and addition of the band. I never thought it was boring, but it took a while into the song to get to the gorgeous part of the vocals and jazzy piano bridge, and maybe people didn't listen long enough for that. The other criticism was that a few people didn't like some of the lyrics, but they pretty much say that about every new song. The version MJ originally posted was from the Listening Room and recently she posted the bubbletweet. The comments on the studio version from Matt's bubbletweet were uniformly positive.


I now believe 4am is a smart choice for a first single. He said in the Detroit News that 4am bridges his jazz hit (YDKM) with a more pop sound. Honestly, if Matt could find a way to make jazz current, which is roughly what he is doing with 4am, it would be his own personal niche that doesn't really have a lot of competition.
